The Grand Elder abandoned his clan members trapped by the light barrier and chose to retreat directly. His speed was so fast that the God Race and the Wolf Race had no chance to stop him. The darkness that had been confronting the light seemed to be sucked away in an instant. The gloomy clouds dissipated with the Sethite wizards’ withdrawal, and golden sunlight once again scattered across the land.
The darkness receded. After fighting the Sethite wizards for days without rest, the perpetually tense God Race and human knights felt as though a great stone had finally been lifted from their chests.
The humans and the God Race relaxed, but the Sethite wizards who were left behind looked ashen, their hearts filled with despair.
An ordinary staff could not withstand such immense Power of Light; the gemstone inlaid at its tip was already covered in spiderweb-like cracks. Cynthia looked up in the direction the darkness had retreated, frowning slightly, but ultimately chose not to give chase.
The God Race was not in good condition and was no longer fit for continued battle. Although the Wolf Race was still present, Cynthia did not trust Joanna right now.
With the God Race, humans, and witches all present, Joanna would have her reservations and would be unlikely to cause trouble secretly. But if they pursued the Sethite wizards to a place that was too remote, there was no guarantee she wouldn’t have crooked ideas.
The foundation of the God Race was still intact; there would be plenty of opportunities to settle scores with the Sethite wizards in the future.
The Wolf Race had been dedicated in their support. After confirming that they would not pursue the Sethite wizards, they spontaneously began to clean up the battlefield. The exhausted God Race, accompanied by the witches, withdrew from the front lines.
When Cynthia came down from the city wall, Darcy was already waiting for her below. She hadn’t even had time to change out of her blood-stained robes. Her face was weary, but her spirits were decent enough. Hearing the sound, she raised her head slightly, watched Cynthia descend the steps, and asked in a deep voice, “How are the Elves?”
“Olivia was injured and needs to recuperate, but the Vampires didn’t get off easy either. They’ll behave for a while,” Cynthia said, concisely summarizing the situation with the Elves and Vampires. She then turned her gaze to sweep across the faces of the God Race members beside Darcy and asked, “Where’s Chloe?”
All the familiar faces of the God Race were there, except for Chloe. Could she have been injured?
Darcy lowered her eyes slightly and said nothing. The other members of the God Race also remained silent, making the already oppressive atmosphere even heavier.
The expression on Cynthia’s face slowly grew solemn. “What happened?”
“Chloe used the Sacrifice,” Darcy said, pressing a hand to her forehead as if trying to control her emotions. “…But it failed.”
Cynthia frowned. “Failed?”
“She can’t control the power that erupts from the Sacrifice like you can, nor can she repair herself.” Darcy sighed. They had actually discussed this spell many times and had guessed this might be the outcome. “…She injured that Sethite Grand Elder’s hand, but she herself was gravely wounded and fell into a coma. She hasn’t woken up yet.”
Fortunately, the Sethite Grand Elder’s Power of Darkness was formidable. After his palm was corroded, he reacted in time to push Chloe away. Otherwise, the outcome would certainly have been one dead and one severely injured, and the one to die would have been Chloe, who had forcibly used the Sacrifice.
Although they all belonged to the God Race, Cynthia was far, far stronger than them, whether in constitution or talent. For a race bearing the name of “God,” it seemed as if Cynthia was the only true member.
After all, before they met Cynthia, they had been living in exile, and the title “God Race” had always been a source of ridicule from the Vampires and other races.
Only Cynthia seemed like a true member of the “God” Race.
Darcy only said that Chloe was severely injured and had not yet woken, but one look at everyone’s expressions told Cynthia that Chloe’s injuries must be extremely serious. Otherwise, with the God Race’s Healing Spell, even if she couldn’t fully recover, she should have awakened long ago.
“I’ll go see her.” Cynthia glanced at the dark circles under Darcy’s eyes, knowing they were all pushing themselves to their limits. She said softly, “You all should go back and rest, too. We can talk about anything else tomorrow.”
Darcy was indeed at her breaking point. She raised a hand to rub her brow and was about to nod in agreement when a rush of hurried footsteps came from behind her. Her hand paused, and she turned her head slightly.
The footsteps belonged to Sophie. She had held on until the very end of the battle with the Sethite wizards and was even now still helping the Wolf Race clean up the battlefield. Her armor was damaged, and her arms and shoulders bore scars from dark magic attacks sustained while protecting the God Race, looking like medals of honor.
Upon seeing Cynthia, she quickened her pace, lowered her head slightly, and said in a low voice, “We’ve captured a Sethite elder.”
Cynthia raised an eyebrow. “Have you found any useful information?”
The God Race’s talents didn’t require the elder to say anything himself, but it did require the information to be in his head.
Sophie nodded, her eyes lifting slightly to glance toward the Morgan Witches. She said gravely, “We’ve found the accomplice who helped the Sethite wizards destroy the Teleportation Arrays.”
Although she didn’t say who the accomplice was, from the way she looked at the witches, both Cynthia and Darcy knew the answer.
The Morgan Witches were not yet aware that the Teleportation Arrays in Ochester had been destroyed, but hearing Sophie’s words, they keenly sensed something was wrong. Chelsea’s brow furrowed tightly. She took a step forward and asked, “What do you mean, an accomplice who destroyed the Teleportation Arrays?”
“Before the Sethite wizards besieged us, many of the Teleportation Arrays in Ochester were destroyed,” Darcy explained in a flat tone before looking at Sophie. “Which family of witches was it?”
Although she asked, she already had an answer in her heart.
“It was the Anderson Family,” Sophie said, then paused, hesitating to continue.
Cynthia was not surprised to hear it was the Anderson Family; she was, in fact, very calm. Seeing that Sophie seemed to have more to say, she asked, “What is it?”
“Although it was the Anderson Witches colluding with the Sethite wizards, according to that Sethite wizard’s memory, the one who had been corresponding with them was a witch named…” Sophie pressed her lips together. “…Eunice.”
During the time the witches lived in the God Race’s territory, Sophie, who followed Cynthia, often saw this witch named Eunice being brought by a witch named Betty to see Cynthia.
She couldn’t imagine that it was her who had betrayed the God Race.
Cynthia was slightly taken aback, her tone laced with surprise. “You’re talking about Eunice?”
Although Eunice was from the Anderson Family, her relationship with the other Anderson witches was not harmonious.
Cynthia didn’t think she would be involved.
“Eunice would never do something like this.” Chelsea, with a stern face, defended Eunice in a serious tone. “Betty likes the God Race, so Eunice would not do anything to harm the God Race.”
She and Eunice had never gotten along and disliked each other, but at a time like this, Chelsea still believed in Eunice. Just as she said, for Betty’s sake, Eunice would never do such a thing.
As for why Eunice’s name appeared in that Sethite wizard’s memory… there must be some misunderstanding.
The sudden implication of an Anderson witch made the atmosphere between the God Race and the Morgan Witches tense. Cynthia glanced at everyone’s expressions, raised a hand to stop Chelsea from saying more, and spoke calmly, “Whether she’s involved or not, we’ll know once we find her and ask.”
And while they were at it, they could “ask” the Andersons. They surely couldn’t deny that they were the ones who destroyed the Teleportation Arrays.
Shastaya. The recent battle had turned the place into a ruin. The monster Molly had summoned by sacrificing herself and her clan members had certainly not disappointed her, though for a dead person, disappointment was no longer important.
The Sethite wizards’ attack was interrupted by the monster, giving the witches a moment of respite. Maia had also reluctantly chosen to withdraw after receiving a message from her family.
Although the Sethite wizards had retreated, the witches had also suffered heavy casualties. The city, already a ruin from summoning the monster, was practically a mountain of corpses and a sea of blood. Kana knelt on the ground, holding on to her last shred of consciousness, only collapsing to the side after watching the darkness recede.
After settling the young witches, Betty and her companions rushed back. They first went to the place where they had separated from Eunice, but apart from a few Sethite wizard corpses, there was no one in sight. Without pausing, they hurried back to the city.
Upon entering the city, the overwhelming crimson stung their eyes. Betty bit her lip; the scent of blood lingering in the air made her afraid to even breathe. The hand clutching the corner of her clothes trembled, but she did her best to steady her emotions and tried to find any clan members still breathing among the bodies on the ground.
“Elder Kana is here!” a cry of surprise suddenly came from the distance. Betty quickly looked up and saw Elder Kana covered in blood, but her chest was still rising and falling. A small sigh of relief escaped her.
Although the city was littered with corpses, a closer look revealed that the majority were Anderson Witches. The casualties among the Garcia Witches were not as severe as she had imagined.
Betty helped all the surviving clan members to one spot and then began to bandage their wounds.
The sound of bone hitting bone, thump, thump, thump, rang out. Betty turned warily toward the source of the sound. A petite witch in a red robe was sitting on a skeleton, running toward them. Because her eyes were swollen, Betty’s vision was blurry. For a moment, she mistook the witch on the skeleton for Eunice. Just as she felt a surge of joy, the skeleton drew closer, and she realized the person on it was Camille.
The light in Betty’s eyes dimmed again. She lowered her head to look at the mangled wound on Elder Kana’s arm, rubbed her eyes, and continued to treat the injury.
“Sister Betty!” Camille was thrilled to see Betty. She jumped down from the skeleton and skipped over to her. “I’ve been looking for you for so long! Are you hurt?”
She ran to Betty’s side, squatted down, and examined her carefully. Seeing a bloody scratch on her face, she said with heartache, “You’re hurt.”
She reached out, wanting to touch the wound, but Betty dodged away.
Betty kept her head down, her tone dejected. “Have you seen Eunice? I can’t find her.”
As soon as she mentioned Eunice, tears began to well up in her eyes again, and her voice trembled.
Camille blinked. “I haven’t seen Sister Eunice, but she’s so strong, she’ll definitely be fine. Don’t worry about her.”
She stood up and looked around, frowning when she saw the numerous Anderson witch casualties.
“So many people died,” Camille said, touching her nose. “Even Elder Molly is dead.”
“Camille, can you take care of Elder Kana and the others?” Betty looked up, her eyes red. “I want to go find Eunice.”
Camille’s eyes flickered. The playful smile on her face had already turned to fear and unease by the time she turned back to Betty. “It’s too dangerous here, Sister Betty.”
“I can’t take care of Elder Kana by myself. You should come with me. Let’s find a safe place to settle the elders first.” Camille ran over and hugged Betty’s arm, saying pitifully, “I’m scared to be left alone.”
