Chapter 17 - Intercept and Kill!
She had her suspicions before, but only now was she certain that the outside was truly the interior of the excavation zone. No wonder the air flowing through the pipes carried the scent of earth.
To facilitate their scheme for the Pure Marine Fossils, these people had set up their main base within the structures built for the frontline excavation personnel inside the mountain.
At this moment, she could see two guards outside with assault rifles slung around their necks, using night-vision goggles to monitor a nearby plot of land in the darkness.
In an open area over there, lights from modified vehicles illuminated several people diligently at work.
Several vehicles were parked as cover, some likely already modified.
Further in was the path to the deeper parts of the excavation zone. The end was probably the legendary ice-bound zone dominated by Bruces.
Sui Xin didn’t delay. She loaded the tranquilizer gun and aimed through the window next to the small door.
With two soft shots, both men were hit in the neck, one after the other.
The drug’s effects spread more easily in this place. Just as she had been instantly knocked out before, they would have to go down together!
However, she would have preferred a silencer. To just blast them away without a sound would have been perfect. A pity she hadn’t found such an accessory yet.
After the men fell, Sui Xin snatched a rifle and quickly moved closer under the cover of darkness, toward the position concealed by the vehicles.
She had been wondering just how these people could modify their vehicles to have the courage to face Bruces. It had been too dark to see clearly before, but now that she was right next to them, she realized—these people were truly capable.
The tank-like vehicle’s frame had been enlarged by a third. A heat circulation system, likely scavenged from other vehicles, had been installed, making it look very robust. The rear seat space had been sacrificed to install an energy tank, supplementing the power system. This multiplied the vehicle’s energy reserves and power system several times over.
Impressive.
She truly didn’t understand this field; she just found it impressive. A thought briefly flashed through her mind—should she take a gamble on those Pure Marine Fossils?
If she got them, she could defy fate and change her life. She would never have to be a pitiful worker again, and she could escape all the dirty business.
But… she snapped back to reality in a second.
A weakling like her was too easily controlled. She was only suited for disguising herself and relying on a stable power. Once out in the wild, she would be nothing but a delicate piece of prey. Possessing wealth without strength would only be a death warrant.
For now, she had to get out.
Several hours of the 48-hour limit had already passed. Although there was still plenty of time left, her heart was pounding with anxiety. She couldn’t be sure when the corporation’s inhumane planning department would pull another stunt.
Ye Chen and his partner had monitors on their protective suits.
How they died was impossible to see clearly from the camera’s angle, which was pointed at a wall of the cell. The M City area actually corresponded to three ruin zones.
The major corporations had too many projects. Given M City’s geographical location, the ruin zones managed by the Tianxi Group’s branch were mostly within the Deep Red Sector. The focus in M City was also on these three ruin zones. Looking at the split-screen livestreams, all three channels were filled with bloody crises from the start. The patterns were similar, only the people were different.
Organized ambushes, brutal counter-kills, gray fog areas, insects, and so on. Compared to the other two zones, the highlight of B05 was, ironically, the weak little analyst. She was feeble, but her mind was sharp. Unfortunately, she died early. After that… B05 became a bit awkward.
There had been over twenty cameras, but a large number were suddenly taken out, leaving only two survivors. The stream’s viewership plummeted. Fortunately, Ye Chen and his partner kept it going—by getting captured, which allowed the audience to see other surviving exploration teams. And then, that was it.
Two prisoners in custody, just filming a wall. What was there to watch?
Tianxi Group headquarters was also rather speechless, but since B05 wasn’t a key zone, they didn’t pay it much mind. They just let it run. It was impossible for every zone to produce the results they wanted; as long as a few key zones delivered good livestream content, it was enough.
But…
“Suggesting that B05 enter the second phase of the countdown early?”
“Why?”
The technical execution department was a bit surprised, but the message from their superior was: “First, if all the times are synchronized, it would be a dead giveaway. An accident should remain an accident. Second, the suggestion came from a researcher in the research department. Her opinion is that since a member of an organization suspected of slaughtering the teams has appeared in the B05 zone, it’s better to advance the schedule to control the variables. If this intruder contacts other organization members and they interfere from the outside, it could lead to undesirable consequences.”
That seemed to make sense. The strategy was meant to be flexible and not set in stone. They began to prepare.
Meanwhile, in the headquarters’ research lab, Lin Sui was on a call with an acquaintance from the Analysis Department.
The person on the other end held a significant position and had considerable authority within this project, which was why they could value her opinion and act on it.
“That Sui Xin, I think there’s something off about her.”
The person on the other end was also watching the livestream. “I saw the video clip you sent. Is it because the pit she fell into happened to contain herbs that the Ironworms fear?”
Lin Sui: “Yes. And I calculated her body data, specifically her weight. Given the gun’s penetration power, the distance, and her weight, it would have been difficult to achieve that kind of impact from the shot. It’s possible she faked it, deliberately jumping into the bitter neem bark that the Red Corrosive Ironworms fear to feign death. As for whether her motive was to avoid being secretly harmed by Ye Chen and the others, or something else, that’s unclear. In any case, it’s suspicious.”
She paused, then said softly, “If she wasn’t wary of Ye Chen and his group, but had seen through the true nature of this operation from the start, and even deliberately took out the livestream cameras, then things get very interesting. Could it be that the person who suddenly appeared and went on a killing spree was also her?”
The person from the Analysis Department pondered for a moment before replying, “I’ve calculated the height, and it doesn’t match. But what you’re saying makes sense. I analyzed it further as well. If her insight and thinking ability are superior to the mediocrity she has previously shown, it’s indeed possible she saw through the scheme. But there’s something you probably don’t know—I pulled her file and found that she has a special constitution.”
Lin Sui didn’t think of any of the superior constitutions. She knew that those selected were all of D or E class status, and it was difficult for such genetic backgrounds to produce good constitutions. So…
“She’s a legendary E-class rice bucket.”
Lin Sui: “…”
“These people have huge appetites, eat a lot, and burn it off quickly. They’re pure-blooded trash. And their weight varies greatly depending on whether they’re full or not, or whether they’ve digested their food. The weight data in the file is inaccurate, so your calculations are also inaccurate.”
That was true. Lin Sui raised an eyebrow. “It seems I misunderstood her. For a little rice bucket like that to get a mid-level position in the M City Analysis Department… her performance is mediocre, but she wasn’t weeded out. Quite special.”
“I understand what you mean, and your intuition has always been sharp. In any case, she’s just a minor character. The B05 livestream has too few camera angles, so spicing it up a bit is fine. But I suggest that instead of getting distracted by this little rice bucket, you should focus on your situation with Young Master Ryan. He’s been seeking you out quite frequently lately. There are rumors he might be interested in pursuing you.”
Lin Sui’s beautiful eyelashes lowered slightly. Looking at the experiment data, she said calmly, “A wolf beneath the throne of power only chases prey. You might as well state it plainly that he’s selecting his current allies and future subordinates. If I can stand out among my teacher’s students, he’ll seek me out even more.”
“Insightful. As long as you know what you’re doing. It’s not easy to get by in a major corporation. All the young masters are competing. The losers get demoted and kicked out.”
“Not picking a side early is a rule of survival for us. But being too rigid and offending the young masters isn’t good either. It’s all a delicate art.”
“I hope this project is a success, so I can get a promotion. You too.”
After ending the call, the woman reviewed her experiment data. Her mind was filtering through ideas for the next experiment, but her eyes glanced at a stack of documents coming through the fax machine.
They were from her contact. The Think Tank was a high-level department, and its Analysis Department was the core repository of knowledge. It wasn’t easy for her in the Research Department to request materials, but it was simple for him. He had sent her the little rice bucket’s file, not for her to review, but to prove his point.
She glanced at it. It really was a rice bucket constitution.
And she was indeed a minor character.
Just as she had that thought, she saw on the few remaining windows for B05 on the livestream, Ye Chen and his partner scream and fall to the ground. From the ground-level perspective, blood flowed out continuously.
Lin Sui saw the Red Corrosive Ironworms crawling.
Hmm… She put down her tweezers, her fingers resting against her cheek, lost in thought.
If the Ironworms had emerged from their bodies, their biological characteristics would dictate a period of internal corrosion and pain first; they wouldn’t erupt so suddenly. And looking at their condition, it seemed less like the worms were bursting out and more like they were burrowing in.
The worms had entered from the outside.
The Helmet Killer had also been captured. She used the worms to break the stalemate and assassinate Ye Chen and his partner.
That meant she wasn’t afraid of the worms.
She must have eaten the bitter neem bark and was surely carrying some on her, which is why the worms wouldn’t harm her.
Where would she get so much bitter neem bark?
The herbs those organizations were keen on collecting were mostly for external injuries, like anti-inflammatories and hemostatics, not bitter neem bark. Was it just a coincidence that this outsider went straight to the pharmacy for this specific herb?
Was she not an impromptu intruder?
It was less like she was an outsider and more like she was an inside mole.
She pondered for a moment, and a scenario quickly formed in her mind: a little rice bucket carrying worms, wearing a helmet, putting on an act, and going on a killing spree… then getting caught and using the worms to escape.
Right now, she was probably crawling around in the pipes with her butt in the air.
At this moment, Lin Sui’s suspicion of the Helmet Killer reached its peak. However, she didn’t voice her opinion to the Analysis Department again. Being rebuffed once was one thing, but doing so repeatedly would make them think she was frequently meddling in the affairs of other departments.
That was a major taboo in the workplace.
“M City has talent like this?”
Lin Sui laughed, but then the internal line rang. It was a call from a certain Young Master Ryan.
“Special Assistant Lin, I remember you previously mentioned that your teacher suggested bringing back live subjects?”
“Have you considered going there personally to examine the survivors? You could perform dissections on-site, or bring back live tissue samples to headquarters for research.”
“I don’t trust the others. I trust you more.”
This Young Master Ryan appeared cold, but he was meticulous and thoughtful, covering all his bases. And he was trying to brainwash her.
He wanted her to become his subordinate.
He spared no effort to win over key personnel from various departments, acting with respect and humility, presenting a very good posture.
“Apologies, I’ve made some progress with my research here and I’m afraid I can’t get away. Besides, someone with my low combat ability is hardly suited for fieldwork. Thank you for the recommendation, Young Master Ryan.”
“Very well, no matter.” Ryan didn’t seem surprised.
After hanging up, Lin Sui glanced at the livestream screen, thinking that her recent speculation was just a guess, without any evidence.
But this Young Master Ryan was exceptionally sharp. He had quickly sensed that something was amiss from her suggestion to the Analysis Department and had called to probe.
This meant his information network had already penetrated the Analysis Department; he had confidants there.
These young masters were truly dangerous.
But the situation in B05 would soon become clear. Whether the Helmet Killer crawling through ventilation ducts with worms was that same little rice bucket feigning weakness would be revealed in this next phase.
When Liu Yong arrived, Ye Chen and his partner had already been shot to ribbons. Blood was everywhere, and the Red Corrosive Ironworms on the ground were agitated by the sheer amount of it, writhing and climbing all over, releasing a strong corrosive odor to further draw out the blood from the muscles and organs.
The scene was incredibly gruesome.
Liu Yong frowned and ordered someone to burn the bodies, but his nerves were on edge. He had a very bad feeling. Just as he was about to say something, he heard someone running towards them.
“Boss, bad news!”
Soon, Zhou Xingxing, following Lao Zhang and the others, returned to the cell he had just left.
There was no weakling inside, only the corroded ropes.
Zhou Xingxing picked up a rope and sniffed it. “It’s corrosive fluid. She used the Ironworms to break the ropes. She was hiding Ironworms on her body…”
Lao Zhang: “Is this woman insane, hiding worms on her body? Right, she identified what the Red Corrosive Ironworms fear early on. Maybe she took the herb beforehand? Or had the powder on her?”
Zhou Xingxing looked thoughtful, his expression fierce. “No wonder I smelled a grassy scent on her. I thought it was from the herbs in her backpack. But she’s too bold. The cell door was locked, and the lock wasn’t corroded, so…”
“She left through here.”
As Liu Yong spoke, everyone followed his gaze.
There was a corroded gap on the ventilation duct panel. Due to the latches, it couldn’t be opened from below, only from inside the duct by releasing the clips. This was for ease of maintenance and repair, while also preventing people from easily dismantling it from below. After all, many rooms in the corporation’s excavation zone needed to be sealed for security, preventing easy escapes.
Unfortunately, this suitable installation method had met a crazy bitch with worms.
It was obvious now that her earlier act of providing information was just a ploy to stall for time and send them away… Zhou Xingxing was furious.
“I’ll go after her!”
He had always been a lone wolf, feeling it was his responsibility. He should have killed that bitch long ago. He took the lead, quickly jumping up and grabbing the edge of the corroded opening. Unlike Sui Xin, he reached it with ease. He looked up.
The first thing he saw was something crawling onto his fingers.
His heart nearly stopped in fright, because he saw what it was.
Worms!
He fell to the ground with a crash, quickly shaking the worms off his fingers, but the back of his hand was still searing with pain from the corrosive fluid. His face turned pale.
“There are worms!”
“Fuck!”
“This woman is so vicious!”
“Xingxing, are you okay?”
Liu Yong was relieved to see that Xingxing’s life wasn’t in danger. However, he, Zhao Er, Lao Zhang, and Chen Shuanggeng were their strongest fighters. With his hand injured, it would certainly affect his combat performance, which was a problem.
“I remember we have an infrared device. Lao Zhang, you know how to use it. Find her directly. Don’t go into the ducts, there might be worms inside.”
Although he gave the order, Liu Yong soon discovered the device was useless, because someone rushed to report—the two guards outside the small door had been hit with tranquilizer darts and were unconscious.
Liu Yong and the others were stunned.
A tranquilizer gun? Where did she get a tranquilizer gun? All her equipment had definitely been taken. The armory had no ventilation shafts because personnel didn’t need to go in and out regularly, only at specific times to retrieve weapons. So she couldn’t have gotten in there. Then…
Not good!
Liu Yong was the quickest to react. He immediately realized—if that woman had crawled into the ducts, she could have reached his location if she was fast enough. Coupled with the sudden, gruesome deaths of Ye Chen and his partner by Ironworms, it was almost certain she was responsible. That meant she had likely overheard their conversation and realized she had to lure them away to escape.
Then she…
“The modified vehicles! She’s going to steal a modified vehicle!”
When Liu Yong sprinted back to his office and saw the car keys on the desk were gone, his face turned as black as a pot.
“After her!”
Bang!
The moment Liu Yong led his men rushing out the small door, they saw the two unconscious team members.
Lao Zhang had just been shouting at the people in the modification area to search for and kill any suspicious individuals.
Vroom!
The modified steel beast roared to life, charging straight at the bewildered modification technicians. They scattered in terror, not even having time to draw their guns.
Liu Yong grabbed an assault rifle to fire from a distance, but it was too far to aim accurately.
He could only watch as it charged into the darkness.
“Chase them!”
Everyone sprinted towards the other vehicles to give chase, only to find…
Bang!
Zhou Xingxing, clutching his hand, was caught off guard and covered in black smoke that erupted from a car behind him.
The hot sparks stung his cheeks.
The cars’ exhaust pipes had been blocked. When they were forcibly started, the rear of several vehicles exploded with a series of bangs. The pipes would have to be replaced.
Fucking hell!
“This woman is toxic!”
“So despicable.”
“Too despicable. Jian Siye is a saint compared to her.”
Everyone was furious, cursing and swearing. Zhou Xingxing sprayed his wounded fist with antiseptic, gritting his teeth in pain.
He was humiliated, to be played like this by such a weakling.
He was so pissed!
“Fix them immediately! Everyone, move out!”
Liu Yong knew they couldn’t delay. Otherwise, if that woman got inside first and took the Pure Marine Fossils, it would be too late.
Lao Zhang said grimly, “Actually, there’s no need to rush. She got in, but the inside isn’t a place she can just waltz through alone.”
Liu Yong calmed down as well. He swapped out his magazine, composed himself, and was about to give further orders… when a subordinate came running again.
What is it now!
It was never good news when they came running to deliver a message.
What has that woman done now?
This woman feels even more troublesome than Jian Siye back in the day.
“No, no, it’s about the two bodies…”
“More worms?”
“No, we burned the bodies clean and dealt with the worms. We’re still checking the ducts for any left. But we found this.”
The subordinate took out a button.
“After the bodies and clothes were burned, we found that these buttons are metal, but they have camera equipment inside.”
In an instant, everyone fell silent.
Liu Yong and Lao Zhang exchanged glances, a sense of impending doom and the terrifying feeling of their fates being choked in a vice grip.
So, everything they had done had been discovered by the company?
That meant this could all be a trap.
Were they just prey trapped for two years, or perhaps… test subjects?
Do we retreat?
Break out, head to the safe house, retreat, retreat now!
Otherwise, we’ll die here sooner or later.
But…
Liu Yong gritted his teeth. “We can’t retreat. If the company has already found out, or has us under control, who’s to say it’s not dangerous outside? Most importantly—I don’t believe the value of us as so-called human experiments is greater than the Pure Marine Fossils and other fossil resources inside. That’s not logical.”
“We have to risk it all.”
“Let’s go!”
The convoy was quickly readied. The huge tires gripped the ground, and they soon sped off, madly chasing the weakling who had escaped.
“The modifications are decent, but too many functions are missing.”
In the vehicle, Sui Xin put on the vehicle-mounted helmet, controlled the steering wheel, and checked the vehicle’s condition. Because it was modified for a specific purpose, many of the original tank-like vehicle’s superior features—like GPS positioning, defense systems, weapon cruise control, and so on—had been sacrificed. Only some of the vehicle’s basic capabilities remained, with a focus on cold resistance, heat circulation, and corrosion resistance.
The anti-corrosion material was naturally a metal shell. The tires were fitted with serrated treads, and the wheels were covered with metal casings. When rotating at high speed, they would crush the worms and also prevent them from corroding the tires from the side.
In any case, a person with average skills like Sui Xin didn’t have much room to show off.
“I wonder to what extent Xu Wen and his people have modified their vehicles.”
She planned to follow the route to the fork ahead and take the path leading outside to the safe room. In truth, she was also gambling, betting on a slim chance of survival, ready to adapt to whatever came her way!
However, along the way, she also saw various mining marks on the cave walls. The rock here was hard, requiring special mirror-stone drills to excavate continuously. This vast space had been carved out bit by bit. The fossil resources mined over the years must be immense. If there were any remaining reserves inside, Tianxi Group would certainly not be willing to use it as a livestream set.
Because once used, it would be essentially ruined. Too much information would be exposed, and it would most likely have to be blown up. Other organizations from the ruin zones might come to investigate later, leading to endless trouble. So it would basically be a write-off.
Sui Xin observed as she drove, noticing that the marks on the walls also included the skeletons of some marine creatures. These were worthless fish bones, not yet fossils, possessing no bio-energy, nor were they of a special type. Thus, they weren’t worth the effort to excavate and were left embedded in some of the rocks.
Her journey was like reading through ancient deep-sea history.
Ten thousand years? A hundred thousand years?
The fork in the road was fast approaching. Sui Xin took a deep breath, preparing to turn down that path, but just then…
Sui Xin saw, in the area illuminated by her headlights, that there were tire tracks at the fork leading outside.
Tire tracks weren’t scary—but these were the serrated tracks of the new, modified tires.
The tires modified to combat the Ironworms.
Another modified vehicle had passed through here…
Sui Xin’s grip on the steering wheel tightened. She slammed the accelerator… As she sped past the fork and made a wide turn… the headlights of a massive vehicle hiding behind the corner wall flashed violently, and a person on top holding a sniper rifle pulled the trigger.
The bullet was already fired, heading straight for the driver’s seat of Sui Xin’s sliding vehicle.
Boom!
It exploded, shattering a huge fish bone exposed on the surface of the cave wall.
The fish bone was pulverized, but the rock itself was mostly unharmed, given its high hardness.
But—it was undoubtedly like having air support.
The vehicle dodged it.
In that brief flash of light and the slide, Sui Xin saw the explosive round fly past her vehicle, grazing its tail. Her gaze fell on the other vehicle.
The driver was a woman with short hair, wearing sunglasses. The front passenger seat had a sunroof, and the other person was popping out from that position to snipe at her.
Xu Wen’s people?!
Damn it!
Sui Xin had no desire to fight these professional combatants to the death. She slammed the accelerator and charged towards the fork.
She also lacked the ability to drive one-handed while shooting at the sniper.
“Oho, is she trying to ram us to death?”
“No, she seems to be trying to escape, probably to the safe house.” Jian Siye raised an eyebrow, somewhat surprised, and also realizing that the situation might be different from what she and Xu Wen had previously speculated. One of the three survivors who had come in this batch, this girl who looked so weak, seemed more desperate to escape, as if some terrible crisis was forcing her to abandon the riches of the excavation zone.
In any case, this girl had managed to steal a modified vehicle from under Liu Yong and his men’s noses. Jian Siye didn’t believe she was ignorant of the situation here, so she felt a sense of unease, that things were not under her control.
“Stop her, don’t let her get away. This person must know some secrets.”
Jian Siye was decisive, having her companion fire to block Sui Xin while she turned the steering wheel with one hand. The vehicle surged forward powerfully. With her other hand, she drew the pistol from her waist and, as the two vehicles slid towards each other for a second time, aimed the muzzle at the side window of Sui Xin’s vehicle.
Sui Xin saw it in a fleeting glance, but she held onto a sliver of hope—the material of the modified vehicle’s windows was unknown. It was possible that its bulletproof capability had been reduced for better cold resistance, making it unable to withstand a bullet. But the surface was covered with some bone-like material, probably cold-resistant armor made from the bones of these deep-sea creatures. It was a case of using the local ingredients to make the local dish. These deep-sea creatures were mostly resistant to cold. The idea was clever. Although it increased the vehicle’s clumsiness, it was beneficial for confronting Bruces to some extent, and right now, it could also block the angle of the opponent’s shots.
Unless this person’s aim was so precise that she could shoot through the limited space not covered by the bone and hit her directly.
Bang!!
A spiderweb crack appeared on the window—Aaaah! Why is her aim so good? She actually hit the exposed glass! Isn’t this Jian woman a technician?
Luckily, the window glass still had some defensive capability, but…
Sui Xin still floored the accelerator, pointing the vehicle towards the exit outside. Go, go, go!
However, the vehicle behind seemed to have better performance. It had been falling behind, but after accelerating, it caught up fiercely, continuously closing the distance.
“Don’t kill her, just stop her.”
“OK!”
The young man on top aimed the sniper rifle at the vehicle in front of Sui Xin, firing continuously.
The bullets peppered the road ahead of her, as if toying with a poor little mouse.
To avoid the shots, Sui Xin constantly changed direction, speeding through the vast and deep tunnel. Dust billowed, and the roar of the engines echoed endlessly in the passage.
But Jian Siye still caught up.
Bang! The second shot was aimed.
It hit the original crack in the window, the sound of it shattering like a firecracker.
Damn it!
Sui Xin was so scared her hands slipped off the steering wheel, and she almost crashed head-on into the wall. She hastily grabbed the wheel and swerved sharply…
But Jian Siye had already maneuvered her vehicle to press in, scraping alongside and pinning her car.
Bang, bang, bang!
The vehicle was forced against the cave wall.
The wind roared explosively.
Liu Yong and his men had already heard the commotion—coming from the adjacent fork.
Strange?
The adjacent fork leads outside. Could that little psycho be trying to escape instead of going for the Pure Marine Fossils?
Liu Yong was thoughtful, but he gave a decisive order, “Chase forward, circle around to flank them. Xingxing, you pull back to the outside, take the fork entrance.”
“Yes, sir.”
The convoy split. Several vehicles turned around to head outside, preparing to execute a pincer movement. But what they didn’t know was…
The research lab.
Inside the research lab’s inner hatch, the one Sui Xin and the others had failed to open before, within that space, in the dim world, a thick odor, the squishing sound of a creature stepping on insect shells, and the sharp scraping of claws on the cold hatch door.
The kind of sound that could give you goosebumps.
But!
There was one sound that could make the goosebumps vanish in an instant.
The control lock next to that door glowed red, and the text on it was read out, just like this.
“Experiment chamber opening soon, opening soon…”
“10, 9, 8, 7…”
“Synchronized, excavation area main gate unlocking soon…”
Sui Xin could almost predict that once her vehicle scraped against the wall and was finally crushed, she would die along with the disintegrating car!
She was going crazy. She yelled through the car’s speaker.
“Sister! Don’t do this! I just want to get out, I’m not planning to fight you for those fossils.”
My, this woman’s voice was so soft?
Melancholy and delicate, so pitiful, she sounded like she was about to cry.
The young man was surprised, then burst out laughing. “A soft girl, huh? Sister Jian, she’s way gentler than you.”
But Jian Siye said coldly, “You want to get out? All the more reason not to let you. The safe house can only be opened once. If you leave, the way out is sealed. What about us?”
“Why don’t you tell us the secret of why you’re in such a hurry to escape? Maybe you can join us.”
Pah!
You people trapped here are all blinded by greed, your hearts are twisted. Liu Yong’s group also said they’d recruit me, but behind my back, they were just planning to kill me after I was no longer useful.
She didn’t believe them for a second.
Sui Xin gritted her teeth internally, despising Jian Siye, while struggling to keep her vehicle from being completely pinned against the wall. She gripped the steering wheel tightly, her head covered in sweat, as she shouted, “Sister! This place is going to explode! After the 72-hour lockdown on the outer gate, the energy core will activate its self-destruct function! What’s the point of looking for fossils? Let’s escape!”
It was actually 48 hours; she had deliberately extended the time.
“Sis, elope with me!”
Jian Siye and the young man were shocked. A 72-hour self-destruct?
“Then stop the car, and we can discuss this.”
“You stop first!”
“You’re in the weaker position right now.”
“No! You bad people are all bullying me. I don’t trust you.”
“We’re not bad people, not like those guys outside.”
“Yes, you are! That guy named Liu, I kindly gave them information and wanted to join them, but they turned around and wanted to bully me. That Zhou Xingxing guy, to intimidate me, he put worms on my teammates and killed them, just to force more information out of me! Is he even human? You scum! We’re all from the same company, we’re supposed to be family, how could you be so cruel?!”
She seemed furious, her voice cracking, clearly showing her hatred for Liu Yong and his group.
However, through her words, Jian Siye also deduced one thing.
She had just escaped, which meant Liu Yong and his men were surely chasing her.
“A Li, get down.”
“What?”
“Someone’s here!”
Sure enough, they heard the sound of other vehicles…
And the moment A Li ducked his head back in, a bullet flew overhead. Bang!
It hit the cave wall, sending sparks flying.
The falling sparks startled Sui Xin, and her face darkened.
That came from behind, probably from the fork they had just passed—Liu Yong’s group had caught up!
Jian Siye saw the lights of the other vehicles in her rearview mirror.
She immediately pulled her vehicle to the side, giving Sui Xin some space.
“Little crybaby, drive forward. Let’s get out of here, or we’re all dead.”
Who’s a little crybaby?
Why do these people love giving me labels? Is this a consistent tradition within Tianxi Group, inside and out?
Sui Xin was frustrated. If these two hadn’t intercepted her, she would have escaped already, and without making so much noise that Liu Yong’s group could track and catch up to her.
But Sui Xin couldn’t afford to dwell on it. She could only floor the accelerator… and she could already see the light of the exit ahead.
Just as she burst out of the tunnel and saw the sunlight outside…
Bang!
A vehicle rushed out from the side, like a car suddenly pulling out into traffic, aiming to ram her.
It slammed right into Sui Xin’s vehicle.
With a tremendous crash, her vehicle was brought to a dead stop.
It was unknown if the person inside had been killed in the crash.
